The Mint facility in Denver was established in 1863 and functioned as an assay office where miners would bring their gold dust and nuggets to be melted, assayed and cast into bars. In the early 1900's the government decided to turn the Denver facility into a working mint. In 1906, the mint produced $27 million in gold and silver coins. Today, the Mint's production can exceed 50 million coins per day.
